Apep, the ancient serpent of Egyptian mythology, was the eternal enemy of the sun god Ra. Each night, Apep attempted to swallow Ra’s solar barque as it traveled through the underworld.
Though never fully vanquished, Apep's defeats symbolize the triumph of order over chaos. His nightly battles represented not only physical threats but also cosmic imbalance, a force that the Egyptians believed must be subdued daily to maintain harmony across the world.
Priests of Ra would perform rituals to banish Apep’s influence, and many spells in the Book of the Dead invoke protections against his darkness. Apep, while a figure of fear, also reinforces the power and resilience of divine order in ancient Egyptian belief.
