Stribog: Slavic God of Wind and Cold

Stribog
Stribog, the Slavic god who commands wind and winter's breath.

Stribog is the ancient Slavic god of wind, sky, and cold air. Known as the "grandfather of the winds," Stribog was said to unleash storms and gusts across the vast Eurasian steppes. Sailors, farmers, and travelers alike acknowledged his unseen hand in both the refreshing breeze of spring and the punishing gales of winter. Though feared for his harshness, Stribog was also respected as a natural force that could cleanse, clear, and shift the world.

Unlike many gods who dwell in the earth or underworld, Stribog was a figure of the open sky, associated with movement, direction, and change. The Slavs believed that when winds roared through forests or howled over plains, it was Stribog’s voice that they heard. Some traditions considered him an elemental force more than a personalized deity, yet others described him as an aged, white-bearded spirit wrapped in frost and clouds, ever restless and ever watching.
